Briar Hill Sandstone (Massillon Formation) is a moderate to well sorted, medium grained, quartz-rich sandstone.  Matrix content (silt and clay) is minimal, making up 2% or less of the rock. The grains are cemented by silica and hematite.

Four distinct varieties of quartz are found in Briar Hill Sandstone, Quartz accounts for 87% to 97% of the stone's composition, with monocrystalline quartz comprising most of the quartz content.

The unique combination of the strength of the quartz matrix and the coloration provided by iron oxide and other trace minerals make Briar Hill Sandstone "the most durable of building materials."
